Finding the Opportunity

The second day of the four day workshop series covers how to find the right opportunity to suit your personal requirements which were established during the first day. After reviewing different investment objectives, each attendee will write and review their own investment specification. The specifications will be tested to ensure that they are reasonable and achievable given the individual’s time and monetary constraints. A selection of potential leads will be reviewed along with a standard method of analysing the quality of the source. Two guest speakers will provide insight into two methods of finding high quality leads before the day closes with a review and question & answer session.

The results from this workshop will directly feed into the next workshop about Due Diligence and Investment.

Who should attend

You should attend this workshop if:

  • You are considering spending time and/or money working with a business.
  • You have never invested in a small company before but think it may be a good idea.
  • You want to reduce the amount of time you devote to finding companies to work with.
  • You want to reduce the number of failing companies you invest time or money with.
  • You need an overview of the small company investment process.
  • You need to increase the number of opportunities to review.
  • You are concerned about the risks of working with the management team of small companies.
  • You wish to diversify your investment portfolio by using a new asset class (private equity in unlisted businesses).

It is not a requirement to have attended the “Finding the Investable” workshop although this will be a distinct advantage.

Pre-requisites

You must have one of the following:

  • At least two days per month you wish to invest spending time working in/on a company and at least £100,000 of free funds you wish to invest (being registered as a High Network Individual or Sophisticated Investor).
  • You wish to spend at least a day a week working with an aspiring and keen management team of a small business.

Guest Speakers

There are two guest speakers during this workshop who will provide insight into the Business Angel investment world and/or Executive Recruitment operations.

Outcome

By the end of the day you will have a specification of the type of company you are looking to intervene in, how you will add value and have an idea of how you will recover your investment of time and/or money. You will know how to use your specification in conversations with potential sources of leads of opportunities and hear from the managers of two source of leads: an Executive Recruitment Company and Business Angel Network. You will review some strategies to maximise the benefit you gain from networking sessions and categorising the resulting leads.
