Why and When

The first session of this one day workshop looks at a company growth model in more detail examining the “pinch points” where outsiders can add maximum value. Concepts such as “Crossing the Chasm” and “The Long-tail” are explained and the attributes of types of intervention are discussed. We will look at some tools from coaching that help us evaluate the aspirations of a company’s executives before completing a “Values” exercise ourselves. This exercise will help each attendee to understand how they are seeking to benefit from the interventions in specific company’s and is followed by a discussion about why people get involved. After lunch an active investor will give an overview of why they get involved and the benefits that they have gained as a result. The final session covers some of the risks of involvement so you can mitigate the extreme position of having your whole personal wealth at risk.  The day concludes with a discussion on the expectations of the return on time/money invested.

The results from this workshop will directly feed into the next workshop about finding and evaluating the right opportunity for you.

  • You are considering spending time and/or money working with a business.
  • You have never invested in a small company before but think it may be a good idea.
  • You want to reduce the amount of time you devote to finding companies to work with.
  • You want to reduce the number of failing companies you invest time or money with.
  • You need an overview of the small company investment process.
  • You need to increase the number of opportunities to review.
  • You are concerned about the risks of working with the management team of small companies.
  • You wish to diversify your investment portfolio by using a new asset class (private equity in unlisted businesses).

It is not a requirement to have attended the “Finding the Investable” workshop although this will be a distinct advantage.

Pre-requisites

You must have one of the following:

  • At least two days per month you wish to invest spending time working in/on a company and at least £100,000 of free funds you wish to invest (being registered as a High Net Worth Individual or Sophisticated Investor).
  • You wish to spend at least a day a week working with an aspiring and keen management team of a small business.

Guest Speaker

An active investor will provide some insight and “war-stories” of working with small companies highlighting some of the pitfalls they discovered and the joy and excitement of working with an aspiration, forward-thinking management team.

Outcome

By the end of the day you will have an understanding of the typical growth path of a company in its turnover, number of employees and pinch points. You will have articulated your core values and be able to align this with the needs of a target investment. You will have an understanding of the risks involved to both your time and capital when you intervene in a business. Further, you’ll have some strategies for minimising the risk and increasing the benefits of your input. The guest speaker will have provided you with real insight into the world of active investing in businesses from someone who has been there and is currently intervening.
